This meaningless wonderful world — What is the meaning?

London-based artist Sebastian Hummerton is holding his first solo exhibition in Japan at the Ginza new branch of the Shiraishi Gallery. Hummerton employs a variety of techniques and mediums, including ceramics, painting, and video installations. His exhibition titled “What’s the point?” explores fundamental human nature and our relationship with the vast information platform of the internet.

In this exhibition, the artist, who has previously expressed fatigue with the rapid pace of technological progress, addresses the proliferation of information and images in contemporary society. His new focus is to explore the visual language of the internet through painting.
The works on display feature themes from manga, anime, video games, and movies. Sitting between art history and contemporary culture, memes are presented as modern still lifes that reflect the information-rich internet age.

Hummerton: I wanted to create a nonsensical exhibition that reflects the oversaturated web of images and information around the world. I cut and paste seemingly unrelated themes and objects onto the canvas, encouraging viewers to create new meanings by connecting the dots in my paintings and drawing inspiration from these references, whether they are familiar or not.
